The Affiliate Link Cloaker is a user-friendly WordPress plugin which allows you to cloak affiliate links. It can also be used to shorten links on your WordPress blog.

Plugin Description

Affiliate Link Cloaker allows you to create a cloaked link for any affiliate URL. After you created a cloaked link you will be able to use that anywhere on your website. Anyone visiting your website will see the cloaked/shortened link. Once the link is clicked the visitor will be redirected to the full URL.

Installation

Via FTP

1. Unzip and Upload the folder ‘affiliate-link-cloaker’ to the ‘/wp-content/plugins/’ directory.
2. Activate the plugin through the ‘Plugins’ menu in WordPress.

Via WordPress Plugin Uploader

• On your Dashboard go to “Add New” under “Plugins”.
• Click “Upload”.
• Click “Browse”.
• Select the “affiliate-link-cloaker.zip” file and hit “Install Now”.
• Once the Installation is completed, click “Activate Plugin”.

Usage

1. Once you install and activate the plugin, go to “WP Link Cloaker” under “Settings”. (See screenshot here)
2. Under “general settings” of the plugin there is a field “Cloak Word”. In this field you can enter any text which will be used to create the tiny URL. The default text is “item”. If you change any text of the field click “Update”. (See screenshot here)
3. Now go to the tab “Add Link”. (see screenshot here)
4. There is a field called “Target Link” where you need to enter your full affiliate URL or any link that you want to shorten. Enter the URL and click “Save”. (see screenshot here)
5. Go to the tab called “Manage Links”. (See screenshot here)
6. You will see that a “Cloaked/Shortened URL” has been created for the URL you just provided. Now use this “Cloaked version of the URL” anywhere on your blog. (see screenshot here)

Google has announced its new web indexing system called Caffeine. The good thing about Caffeine is it provides 50 percent fresher results for web searches than it used to do before. Certainly this would be good for the people who update their blogs regularly with new content. As Caffeine indexes blog posts or pages faster, anyone who is searching for information in the web will find links to relevant content much sooner now.

The reason why Google has build their new search indexing system is to help people find the latest relevant content and meet their expectations. People always expect good search results from Google. There are many blogs out there who are already outdated with information. But they just come in the first page because their blogs were established earlier. So even if a new blog has reliable information it might not come in a good place in the Google search results.

With this new web indexing system Google analyzes the web in small portions continuously and update the search index. Whenever it finds any new pages or new information on an existing page, it adds those to the index instantly. So users get fresh search results of new contents quickly where the old indexing system of Google were divided into some layers; some of which were refreshed faster and some slower. But the main layer used to update in every couple of weeks. So it had to analyze the entire web to update a layer of the old index which means there was a delay in indexing a page or post after anyone publishes any new content.

Now that the page indexing is faster and relevant, it’s good to keep an eye on updating the website regularly with new content. That way it will be more likely to get a good position in the Google search result and consequently it will also increase website traffic.

Couple of days ago I received an email from WordPress saying “Someone has asked for a password reset for www.wordpress-ecommerce.com, If you are the right person follow the link to reset your password”. I was totally surprised getting that email as it never happened to me and I was never that worried about the security of my website before. Luckily I found a WordPress plugin named “Login LockDown” and installed on my site instantly.

One good think about this plugin is it keeps track of the IP address and after a certain number of login attempt (which you can specify in the settings of the plugin) from the same IP address, it disables the login option. So anyone who is trying to hack your password using brute force won’t be able to do anything.

There are 5 options under the main settings.

• Max Login Retries: It determines how many times someone can tries to log in from the same IP.
• Retry Time Period Restriction: you can specify a time period after which someone can retry.
• Lockout Length: Length of the time period for lockout.
• You can also lockout invalid username and mask login error checking the option.

At the bottom of the plugin settings, you can also see if it has blocked any IP address currently. If it does that means someone was trying to get access to your site.

Another mistake that people often do is installing any kind of free WordPress Plugin on their server. Free WordPress plugin doesn’t mean that it’s secure. Before installing any plugin you need to make sure that it’s credible and helpful for you. Some people even don’t use any plugin but they will have to have hundreds of free WordPress plugins installed on their site. What they don’t realize is any of this plugins might have a malicious PHP script. Once you activate the plugin the malicious PHP script will run and cause harm to your site. And who knows how worse it can be. I’ve a friend whose website got hacked by  this. Not too long ago. The Malicious PHP script which caused harm to his site not only did different weird things but also changed the file permission of all the folders and files. Consequently, his site became so vulnerable that it can be hacked by other people easily.

So even if nobody has hacked your login information, you are letting other people get into your site just by installing a free WordPress plugin. I recommend you to think wisely before installing any WordPress plugin, no matter if it’s a free plugin.
